Swimming is a recreational activity apart from its health benefits as a form of exercise. But as far as the maintenance of the pool and the well-being of the swimmer are considered it is important to pay heed to related safety norms. Any carelessness on this regard could lead to disastrous results.

The most important aspect to be looked after is the water safety. Professional swimming pools generally take care to look after the quality of water in their pools but same is not the case with local ones. Often it is found that pools store highly contaminated water that adversely affects the health of the swimmers whether it is adults or children. One should take careful notice of the chlorine level and the pH level of the water contained and also that the pool is free from dirt and debris. To prevent such issues the swimming pools should be sanitized on a regular basis to eliminate any type of contamination. A pool cover is an ideal way to prevent dirt from entering the pool. It also safeguards the pool from the entry of foreign elements like insects.

There are differentiated levels of water in a pool that serve the requirements of swimmers at various level of experience. A diving area which is deeper than the rest, a normal depth area and toddler’s area are the usual areas of a pool. Amateurs are the group of people who must exercise extra caution.

Medical conditions should also to be taken into account before heading on to swimming. For instance, heart patients, people with blood pressure and those allergic to water in swimming pools should take medical advice as a pre-requirement. The safety of kids is yet another important issue.

Few other precautions to be exercised include:

• Never leave children unattended whether or not they know swimming in or around the pool.
• Make sure that there is always a lifesaving flotation device near the pool.
• Building high fences which can be locked around the pool will prevent children from falling in it.
• In case there is a pool cover, never leave it partially opened.
